Historic Windows, Repair and Restoration

Window repairs can be intimidating. From a functional and aesthetic standpoint they are complex elements.  That's why many repair people will head in the direction of window replacement kits with insulated glass.

But this approach is definitely not for every situation. Vintage windows of course are a visual language that are irreplaceable.  Antique glass and weighted sash, and the timber framed casing are often worth the effort to keep and with some tasteful additions of proper sealing, flashing, and modern wooden storm windows can approach the R value of a modern window.

Also with appropriate wood selection and paint, these repaired windows should be good for another 200 years.

Many modern windows have flaws, either in materials (new growth pine) or design. (see the blog post "Repairing or Replacing the Modern Window")
